what we end up doing is just posting payment on the 2nd one, and then if they checkout early or extend then they need to both be at the desk.
the whole guest shares needs an overhaul, we should be able to auth 2 cards at once, and also be able to check in and out each person separately, guest A arrives at 3pm but guest B doesnt until 7pm, it would be nice to be able to check in guest B at 7pm using the same method as a regular reservation by auth the card sign their reg card, and off they go, same with checkout, and when you checkout they get their own folio not the combined one. by doing this if one guests arrives or leave on a different day than the other the room charges only share on the days they are both checked in. I am sure programming this would not be easy but it would be doable if we were able to auth more than one card (which other systems I have used allows more than one card and allows the guest shares to work this way)

In hotels like hours, where about 50% or more reservations have a third party billing, not being able to authorize different credit card within the same reservation make it very hard for us to run our business. We can never authorize these rooms for incidentals.
