It would be useful to be able to pre-authorize payment before check in to identify cases where the guest's credit card isn't valid or is declined before the guest attempts to check in.

100% agreed, especially on sold out nights. That way we are able to prevent no show reservations. The only way to do this currently is by checking the guest into a room, then "undoing" the check-in which can cause an issue with housekeeping and room status.
Is this something that might be implemented in the near future?
This would be a very helpful option to weed out the reservations with an invalid card that don't show and their number doesn't work to contact the guest. We end up having unsold rooms that could have been sold had we been able to pre-authorize the card the morning of.
